Faceless and forgotten

Female form 1

Female form 2

Just a few days before the time Leslie created her Fabulous Faceless Figures I did my own. Independent of her. Great minds and all that… Same wavelength… I then proceeded to completely forget about them. Today I was packing my sketchbooks to go home and found them. One is Micron pen, the other mechanical pencil, both sketched from small statues my mother has on her sideboard. There seems to be something profound in the absence of face.

These are beautiful. They DO say so much about the form. Our eyes seem to take in so much more when the artist omits the face. Love these, Alex!
Thank-you for the link. State side, shortly?

Yea, I am back home now! This is so great! Especially missed my two working desks – the one for drawing and the one for painting (I know I am spoiled :D) Funny how we both did faceless images literally during one week without discussing it!

Welcome home, Alex. TWO DESKS!!!!!! I’m working at re-organizing my clutter today because I DON’T have TWO DESKS. 🙂

    What wonderful stylized figures.
if I could only be that thin…….

Glad you liked them, Carol! These statues are indeed beautiful, but very stylized. Nobody can look that thin and pointy in real life, LOL!

Interesting – they remind me in some ways of the African statues my parents used to collect. The shapes are beautiful.

These are from my parents’ collection of African masks and statues :D! What is interesting that our parents seem to have similar tastes. Thank you for your comment and compliment!

These remind me so much of African art…almost abstract in appearance but full of emotion and meaning.

Thank you, Linda! I am almost 100 percent sure that the statues from which I sketched are African. My father has a nice little collection of African masks and figures, I think these are from this collection. I am loving the effect that an absence of face has on a figure.
