Go west, young man, go west

Go west, young man, go west!

Go west, young man, go west!

I am undecided about this sketch. On a positive side I got the likeness in under 3 hours, that’s good. On the other hand nose needs work, and there are other problems.  I can go back and spend some time working on the nose. But my goal was to do quick portrait sketches to practice features, not perfecting them. I got the likeness and I got the facial expression, perhaps I should stop while I am ahead.

I think all you need to do is darken the upper eyelids, the nostrils at the top, and the mouthline; and add just a touch more graphite to the whites of the eyes. I once took a portrait class and this is what the instructor pointed out time, after time, after time.

Thank you for your suggestion, Jim! I can see how the eyes and the eyelids can be darker, especially in the corners, that would set them deeper into the head. But I was thinking of leaving this little drawing as is, even though I now know how to make it better. I want to have a reference of my starting place as I teach myself portraiture. Good to have you stop by!
