Mike
Meet Mike!
Mike is a dear friend, a wonderfully kind, intelligent and caring human being with a wicked and dry sense of humor. He is also a wonderful cook. This image is from our get together with a few other friends on Sunday, August 15th. For this day Mike brought a cheese-veggies-fruit platter to treat us all. We were very appreciative, it was all gone in minutes! I loved the double-cream brie with fresh plumbs!
The image is a quick sketch in graphite to try a new technique. Somehow I have it that sketchbook drawings ought to be quick. None of these 30…40…60… hours photorealistic drawings with meticulous layers. This is cross-hatching and done in 2 hours.

Alex:
This is really nice. The shading, highlights and hair so well done.

Hi Tim! Good to see you! Thank you for the comment! I am trying to learn to do a fast portrait, to get the likeness in a short time – it’s quite a challenge.
Good job, Alex! You have accomplished so much in such a short period of time. I like this drawing, mainly because I can see your strokes with the pencil. It talks!
Thank you, Leslie! It is always cool to see a brush or pencil marks on an artwork. I am always grateful when an artist allows that, sort of an inside view, a glimpse into the process. I understand what you are saying very well.
you always amaze me with your beautiful pencil drawings. I can’t believe this was a quick sketch for you. Did it show through the other side of the page? How will you handle that? I think I will do more collages and paste in my sketch book rather than draw. But who knows.
Beautiful drawing!
Thanks, Carol! 2 hours is quick in my view, when I compare it to a drawing in which I try for photo-realism. On the other hand it is still whole 2 hours when compared to a 5 min line drawings, as everything it depends on a point of view :D.
The watercolor pencil showed faintly on the other side, but not enough to worry about. The graphite drawing did not show at all. I am thinking I will use this book for dry media, am planning to buy some Conte pencils and draw in Sanguine, Sepia and chalk. Always wanted to try that. The paper in the book is a delight under pencil, smooth and buttery, but allows for really dark darks in graphite.
I tried to find and “friend” you on Art Co-op site, but their people search is not active at the moment. I will send you my profile link in an email, perhaps we will be able to connect that way if you like this idea.
This is a fantastic portrait drawing,
Great job
Thank you, Robert! I have been reading your blog and was very discouraged to read about the DeviantArt group that turned down your portrait. Seems a bit elitist of them, unfortunately. I hope you would find friendlier groups to participate in.
